National Church Residences has completed major renovations at two affordable housing communities—Kinder Towers in Bloomfield, N.J., and Sharpsburg Towers in Pittsburgh.

The $6.6 million rehabilitation of Kinder Towers provides its senior residents with improved apartments and community spaces.

“Even with diligent maintenance and management by National Church Residences since its opening in 1986, the time was right for Kinder Towers’ first-ever major renovation,” said Eric Walker, vice president of affordable housing. “We’re pleased to be improving and preserving 99 affordable senior housing apartments in this community.”

National Church Residences built the 62-and-older community through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program.

Major upgrades to the studio and one-bedroom apartments included new appliances, bathroom vanities, and windows throughout the building, as well as HVAC systems. The community room features a new kitchen area, seating, lighting, and window treatments. A state-of-the-art, television also was added to the library.
With support from lender Orix Real Estate Capital, National Church Residences undertook this substantial renovation as part of a continuing commitment to help seniors nationwide remain at home for life. In addition to the recent upgrades, Kinder Towers offers on-site laundry, a picnic area, scheduled transportation, and an emergency call system.

National Church Residences has 952 units of senior housing spanning 12 communities in New Jersey.
The Ohio-based nonprofit also announced the completion of renovations at Sharpsburg Towers. The $5.2 million project included numerous upgrades and enhancements to the community.

Opening in 1980 and previously renovated in 2010, Sharpsburg Towers provides apartment homes to residents 62 and older. National Church Residences also built the community through the HUD Section 202 program.

Major upgrades have been made to the 103 one-bedroom apartments at Sharpsburg Towers in Pittsburgh.

“The investments made by National Church Residences and our partners were key to preserving this affordable housing community in Pittsburgh, where more than 17% of the population are seniors,” said Walker. “This renovation improves quality of life for our current residents and ensures that the community will serve area seniors for decades to come.”

Major upgrades to each of the 103 one-bedroom apartments included updated kitchen cabinets, countertops, and appliances, new bathroom vanities, and new heating and cooling systems.

The indoor common areas also received a makeover that included a more inviting front lobby, as well as a new computer and multipurpose room and a refreshed community room with an updated kitchen and amenities for meetings and social gatherings.

“National Church Residences would like to recognize and thank the financial partners who made this project possible, including the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, National Equity Fund, and Orix Real Estate Capital,” added Walker.

National Church Residences has 959 units of senior housing across 18 communities in Pennsylvania.
